Gypsy

GYPSY premiered on Broadway in 1959, with book by Arthur Laurents, music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and draws loosely on burlesque star Gypsy Rose Lee’s memoir.

Set in fading 1920s–30s vaudeville, it follows Rose Hovick, the definitive “stage mother,” who relentlessly chases stardom for her younger daughter June, while shy older sister Louise lingers unnoticed. When June elopes to escape Rose’s control, Rose redirects all her drive toward Louise. With vaudeville dead, they land in burlesque; Louise reluctantly steps in and blossoms into witty, sophisticated headliner Gypsy Rose Lee. Rose finally confronts her own unfulfilled ambition and the cost of her obsession in the iconic number “Rose’s Turn.”

A sharp, tender study of ambition, family, and identity, it remains one of Broadway’s greatest works.
